13.7.21 Carol McCrone, Vice Chair of Governors

Ms Dermody, assistant head and history lead,  and I caught up on 6 July to discuss the progress of the history curriculum. It was fantastic to hear now both children and staff have developed their knowledge and love of the subject. The school has some experts in its midst, with one Year 4 girl able to give Ms Dermody a 10-minute talk on the Suffragette movement! Ms Dermody is involved in an exciting project with the University, looking at the legacy of slavery in Nottingham and this topic will be a focus next year, with some exciting joint working with Mr McKeefry’s geography curriculum. Year 3 have recently been lucky enough to visit the new Nottingham Castle visitor centre, to pilot the new activities. This had been a fantastic opportunity for the children, who loved it. She intends to make sure all year groups visit next year, together with other exciting opportunities currently being planned. Interestingly, of the 4 local schools invited to the Castle pilot visit, only Mellers attended! Huge thanks for making the subject come alive for our children and for your fantastic efforts over the last year.
