Focus Provision for Deaf Pupils

We are a Focus Provision for Deaf Pupils at Mellers Primary school. It is a focus provision for deaf primary aged pupils, in the heart of Nottingham City. Our resource has places for 13 pupils.

The children in the FP must meet at least three of the following criteria:

*Child has an EHCP

*Child uses British Sign Language (sign) as their main form of communication

*Child has a severe to profound hearing loss

*Child has at least two years Language delay

Places are given to pupils via the Nottingham City sensory team.

We provide support from a range of specialist staff that ensure the needs of the deaf pupils are fully met within their daily life at school. The FP team support individual students in mainstream lessons, clarifying and explaining any new language. We use a philosophy of Total Communication policy, which embraces signing (Sign Supported English, SSE, and British Sign Language, BSL), lip reading, speaking, use of amplified residual hearing, radio aids, sign support systems, reading, writing.
