Opal Play at Mellers

At Mellers Primary School, we are proud to offer OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), creating exciting opportunities for children to enjoy high-quality play every day. Our dedicated OPAL team, Chantelle Hunter, Nathan Godfrey-Walters, Claire Stafford, Kerrie Lightfoot, Lorna Dermody and Joy Buttress, work together to ensure lunchtimes are fun, active and inclusive.

Children enjoy a full hour for lunch from 12:15pm to 1:15pm. After having their dinner in the hall, they are free to explore a wide range of engaging play opportunities across our outdoor spaces. The playground is organised into different zones, allowing children to choose activities that interest them and encouraging creativity, independence and teamwork.

Our play zones include water play, dressing up, reading and crafts, ball skills, LEGO, toy cars and small world play, and den building. Children are encouraged to play adventurously, take positive risks and develop their problem-solving and social skills through play.

At Mellers, we believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! As children play outside in all seasons, we ask families to provide a pair of wellies and waterproofs so that everyone can enjoy the full OPAL experience, whatever the weather.
